CAMPING & EXCURSIONS Policy Statement

BASIC BELIEFS:

Excursions and camping activities are seen as a valuable means of broadening the child’s experiences and knowledge both within the community and wider environments.

These activities develop children’s independence and self discipline, encouraging cooperation and awareness of other people’s needs.

GUIDELINES:

  1. Parents are made aware that excursions form part of the school program and attendance is expected.
  2. Camping and excursions are organised to support the school program
  3. The camping and major excursions program is a sequential program with activities reflecting the developmental levels of the students, the school structure and opportunities which arise.
  4. The Department of Education guidelines are to be observed in relation to all aspects of any activity.
  5. Local excursions are covered by an annual ‘blanket approval ‘ form. Other
  6. excursions, camps and outdoor activities require permission forms for each activity.
  7. Costs are to be kept to a minimum and opportunity for time payments to be made available. Costs incurred by parents must be considered in relation to the total financial demands being placed on parents over the year.
  8. All camps and overnight excursions must be approved by School Council.
  9. Parents attending camps/excursions are to be approved and minuted by School Council.
  10. The school reserves the right to exclude a child from an excursion if the child’s behaviour has seen to be such that it may negatively impact on the welfare and safety of staff and students.
  11. . In event of inappropriate student behaviour whilst on an overnight camps or excursion, the teacher-in-charge will exclude the student from the activity. Parents will be requested to collect the child from the venue. In the event that they are unable to do so, the student will be accompanied back to school by a staff member at the parents expense.

CAMPS/EXCURSIONS PROCEDURES/CHECKLIST

.......to be completed for all activities undertaken outside the school environment.

    1. The activity supports the program in the classroom.
    2. Approval for the activity has been sought from the Principal and Unit Coordinator.
    3. The activity has been planned and the appropriate forms completed in consultation with the Principal and Unit Coordinator - notification to the Office of Emergency Management at least three weeks prior to the activity.

DoE guidelines have been read and observed in relation to

    4. School Council approval of: overnight excursions, camps, interstate visits, excursions requiring sea or air travel, excursions involving weekends or vacations, adventure activities
    5. Guidelines for supervision
    6. Parent/guardian approval
    7. Student medical information
    8. Guidelines for staff /student ratios
    9. Use of private motor vehicles
    10. The following must be provided to the parent together with the consent  form for the activity:

        • nature of the proposed activity,
        • the risks involved and
        • the degree of supervision

    11. Student medication and emergency management plans are to be completed by parents, with medications clearly labelled and handed to the teacher-in-charge.
    12. Excursion staff must have levels of first aid training which are appropriate to the excursion activities and location.
    13. The consumption of alcohol on camps/excursions by members of staff(including parent and community volunteers) is inconsistent with the standard of professional conduct expected and is contrary to School Council policy.
    14. Grade lists, contact numbers and addresses together with the school emergency contact must be taken on excursions.
    15. Identification tags with school name and contact must be worn or carried by all students on major excursions.
    16. A copy of all documentation must be left at the school prior to the activity.
    17. In the event of an accident:

      • apply first aid
      • seek medical assistance as appropriate
      • notify the principal
      • notify the parents
      • complete appropriate documentation, eg accident forms

     

    18. Fully stocked first aid kits are to be taken on the activity.
    19 Mobile phone to accompany the activity - batteries checked /charged prior to activity.
    20. Video camera to accompany excursion - batteries checked/charged prior to activity.
    21. Digital camera to accompany excursion
    22. Buses:

          • quotes to be obtained,
          • buses booked,
          • confirmed immediately prior to excursion

           

    23. Appropriate travel sickness aids to accompany excursion
