DRESS CODE Policy Statement

BASIC BELIEF

Myrtleford Primary School Council has the authority to create and implement a dress code for our students. A dress code has been adopted for Myrtleford Primary School students in the belief that a uniform encourages a sense of collective and individual pride in students and a sense of identity with the school. Also, uniforms are seen as providing individual safety and group security.

The written requirements of the School Council Dress Code policy take precedence over an individual’s preference in matter of dress.

GUIDELINES

  • The student dress code must enable students to participate actively and safely in school life.
  • The School Council cannot discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against students on the basis of their sex, race, ethnic group, nationality, religious beliefs, colour or disability.
  • Dress code requirements apply to all students (except that exemptions are allowed for on the basis of religious belief, ethnic or cultural background, disability, health problems or economic hardship.)
  • Exemptions on the grounds stated must be sought from the Principal.
  • Support for parents experiencing economic hardship may be provided on request, through the Principal. This support aims to maintain a sense of school identity and allow all students to participate without discrimination or inequity in the school program. The details of requests for exemption or assistance are considered confidential.
  • Summary report of the applications for exemption and the decisions made are to be presented to School Council at the following Council meeting.
  • Review of the dress code will occur as circumstances alter. Any review will involve broad consultation processes with all members of the school community.
  • By enrolling at the school, parents and students accept that school uniform is to be worn.
