School Policies

SUNSMART Policy Statement

Our policy has been developed to ensure that all students and staff attending this school are protected from skin damage caused by the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is to be implemented throughout the year but with particular emphasis in terms one and four.

As part of general SunSmart strategies, our school will:

BEHAVIOUR

  • Require children to wear a broad brimmed hat only whenever they our outside (eg. recess, lunch, sport and excursions) in terms one and four.
  • Require a navy blue broad brimmed hat as part of the school uniform.
  • Work with the parent community to provide SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen for staff and student use.
  • Encourage the application of sunscreen when necessary.
  • Encourage children to use available areas of shade for outdoor activities.
  • Staff on duty and parents should wear hats to provide important role models.
  • The Principal has the right to require children to wear broad brimmed hats at high rist times outside terms one and four.

CURRICULUM

  • Sun awareness and personal responsibility for protection should form an ongoing part of the Health curriculum.
  • Ensure the SunSmart policy is reflected in the planning of all outdoor events (e.g. camps, excursions, sporting events).

ENVIRONMENT

  • Make sun protective clothing items, as part of our school uniform, available for purchase.
  • Outdoor activities should be carried out in shady areas where possible, especially during "high risk" times. The school should make appropriate arrangements to avoid activities at these high risk times.
  • Organise outdoor activities to be held in areas with plenty of shade whenever possible.
  • Schedule outdoor assemblies early in the day or in an area where all students can be in shade.
  • Work towards increasing the number of shelters and trees so as to provide adequate shade in the school grounds.

  • Assess shade provision and usage and make recommendations for increases in shade provision.
