THE GUM LEAF ART EXHIBITION IS NOW ON DISPLAY
The Gum Leaf Art exhibition is now on display at the new Alpine Discovery
Centre, Mt. Beauty. The entries are truly magnificent - if you have time
it's a "must see". The amount on detail painted onto some of these gum
leaves is astounding. All the art work is for sale - prices start at $6 and
go as high as $1500. There are all sorts of flora & fauna paintings,
tributes to Slim Dusty, R.M. Williams, Ned Kelly, sculptures, mosaics,
collages etc.
An artist by the name of Brian Allison has entered two beautiful leaf
paintings. He is carrying on a great family tradition, his grandfather A.W.
Eustace also painted on gum leaves. Examples of the work of A.W. Eustace
can be seen at The National Gallery of Australia and the Chiltern Museum,
his works date back to the 1890s.
Local artists have been great contributors to the exhibition, as well as
many from the region and interstate. In recent days we have seen works hand
delivered from Threadbo, Grafton, Junee, Swifts Creek, Safety Beach,
Corryong and Wodonga. There are a total of 158 entries - not bad for a 1st
time exhibition.
The winner of the 1st prize in the Open section for a painting/drawing on a
gum leaf will receive a cash prize of $1000. Not bad for reasonably small
painting!
The exhibition is located at the Alpine Discovery Centre, Kiewa Valley
Highway, Mt. Beauty and is open daily from 9am to 5pm. All works of art
will be on display until the end of January.
