King Valley Information...

The King Valley region produces a range of wine styles due to the variance in elevation.

Although primarily a vineyard region there are numerous cellar doors so the wine traveller will not be disappointed.

The Italian influence on the arms of the KingValley are evident in the warmth and generosity of the King Valley welcome, where family run Cellar Doors are a great place to pass some time tasting, talking, learning and laughing. The hospitality extends into the award winning Victorian bed and breakfasts, fine wine and gourmet food restaurants, cafes and tearooms of the area

Lake William Hovell
The lake was officially opened in 1971 and was built to harness the waters of the King River for downstream irrigation purposes. The lake contains trout, redfin and some macquarie perch, and the size can surprise, with trout to 3kg and some healthy reddies in the warmer months

Target Species: Brown and rainbow trout, redfin. Macquarie perch are protected in this storage.
Best Methods: For trout, fish can be caught trolling, bait fishing, fly fishing or lure casting. For redfin, trolling, bait fishing, lure casting and jigging work well in the warmer months.
Lure Selection:
Rapalas, baby merlins, mepps, celtas and tassies all work well here at times.
Getting There:
70km from Wangaratta on the Whitfield road.

Paradise Falls

The Northeast's most popular alpine waterfall and secret summer destination would have to be Paradise Falls in the King Valley. The falls are situated approximately 40mins drive from Wangaratta.

Towering above you ten stories high, a waterfall streaming over of a caesium like cliff face. This cliff is appears as a wall off death. A seemingly dangerous place yet hundreds of people walk below it every month without fear. After good rains, the waterfall comes to life. A long strip of water splashing down into one of the prettiest gullies in the Alpine National Park. Walking tracks in the park lead to, and right under the waterfall - and almost under the cliff itself as it is a cave like stucture.

Magnificent views of the King Valley and surrounding mountains can be seen on approach to the falls, and finding your way there is an easy drive a little south of Cheshunt (a pictueque town in the Valley).

Also a beautiful sight impossible to miss are the vineyards and wineries. A large part of the King Valley is devoted to vines and many wineries have cellar doors from which you can sample the fruits of the valley and make purchases.

To get to the King Valley simply turn off the Hume freeway (the Snow Road) a few kilometres SouthWest of Wangaratta. The Snow Road leads to the Oxley cross roads with Miranda Wines on the corner. Turn right at the crossroads . There are plenty of signs so head down that valley and enjoy the trip.

Through the King Valley to Whitfield, and across to Mansfield, makes an ideal scenic alternative when traveling to or from Melbourne

The Whitfield to Wangaratta railway was the first narrow gauge rail line in Victoria. Before the decline of rail branch lines, the King Valley line was the main form of transport for both produce and people.
