Hume and Hovell passed through the Yackandandah valleys in 1824 not long before the area was first settled in 1837. After the discovery of gold in 1852 along the Yackandandah Creek the town flourished.  In 1856 the township was surveyed, land sales began and substantial buildings were constructed.

Today, the town retains a wealth of its Victorian architecture, and picturesque tree-lined streets. Visit Yackandandah and you will find a treasure trove of antiques shops and bric-a-brac. There are teahouses and specialty stores which offer country collectables, old wares, local pottery and high quality hand made timber items. Many buildings, sites, trees and the commercial core of town are now listed by the Australian Heritage Commission, Heritage Victoria and the National Trust.
