Wandiligong is a quiet community of about 250 people who work in the apple orchards and small holdings, its cottage industries and in the neighbouring districts.
The town itself is set in a picturesque valley classified by the National Trust with many clues about its history dotted throughout, it is surrounded by forests and mountain ranges. Morses Creek runs through Wandiligong and features a walking track which follows the course of the river, extending all the way to the town of Bright. Wandiligong’s gold history can be explored at “The Diggings” which is accessed via Centenary Avenue. “The Diggings” was the site of extensive mining and has been beautified with walking tracks and several footbridges across both Morses Creek and Growlers Creek. A highlight of the area is the Chinese Swing Bridge which is a tribute to the large number of Chinese who lived in the Wandiligong area during its gold rush days.
Attractions and Activities in Wandiligong
See Australia’s largest living hedge maze, the largest apple orchard in the southern hemisphere, visit historic buildings and the Alpine Park, or visit in early May when The Wandiligong Nut Festival is on celebrating the nut harvest season in autumn with cooking, comedy and culture.
Several walks in Wandiligong show the visitor the beautiful heritage valley and its history, including the Wandi Wander, Royal Bridge Walk and The Diggings Walk with its Chinese Swing Bridge giving a hint to some of the locals of old.
